Abstract: The side excitation of graded-index fiber by the scattering of lateral laser beam from spherical imperfections of fiber core has been considered. A mathematical model of this process has been developed by the approximation of local plane wave scattering into guided and leaky mode. Numerical modeling has been carried out for polymer optical fiber with parabolic refractive index profile at wave length 632 nm and scattering center diameter 50 nm.
