Abstract: Electromagnetic-field decomposition in a transparent metachiral bi-isotropic medium is performed onto two Beltrami fields, which are characterized by unequal positive wave numbers and common wave impedance. Sign of the wave impedance is determined by signs of permittivity and permeability of the medium. The condition of distinction between forward and backward circularly polarized eigenwaves is obtained.
