Rate Splitting Multiple Access: Current State and Development Prospects

Abstract: Relevance. Rate Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) is considered a promising multiple access technique for cellular networks, since existing methods have limitations under increasing requirements for spectral efficiency and quality of service. Purpose of the study is to review and analyze the works on RSMA published to date, as well as to evaluate the efficiency of RSMA in accordance with the precoding schemes proposed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Methods. The study employs a review and comparative analysis of current research, analysis of a mathematical model of an RSMA-based system, numerical modeling, consideration of laboratory experiments, and simulation modeling. Novelty. The scientific novelty lies in systematizing current research directions in the field of RSMA and providing an additional evaluation of RSMA efficiency for the precoding schemes proposed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute. Results. The basic operating principles of RSMA are described, a mathematical model of the system is presented, recent studies are analyzed, and promising directions are identified, including full-duplex communication, integrated sensing and communications, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, cell-free architecture, and massive antenna arrays. Practical significance. The obtained results can be used for analyzing and selecting multiple access methods, as well as for modeling and designing advanced cellular communication systems based on RSMA.
